League One is packed full of action this weekend as two of the promotion favourites meet. Bolton Wanderers hosts Derby County and there’s also Monday Night Football as Cambridge United face Reading. However, our weekend treble focuses on Saturday’s action.
Wigan Athletic to beat Blackpool
It’s a big price at 5/2, but there looks to be real value in backing Wigan at Blackpool. Last time out, they were handed their first league defeat of the season by Barnsley, but that was hampered by an early red card to Charlie Hughes.
We’ve already seen this term that they are better away from home, having beaten both Bolton and Derby, and there’s no reason why they can’t go to Blackpool and win. The home side haven’t scored in their last five outings in all competitions and their lack of goals is a serious concern. I can’t work out why they are favourites for this one at all.
Oxford United to beat Port Vale
Oxford have been in superb form recently. After a surprise opening day defeat to Cambridge United, they have won four league matches in a row, with both teams scoring in each of those victories. With wins over Barnsley and Derby County, Liam Manning’s side are looking like a strong outfit.
With Tyler Goodrham finding his goalscoring boots, Oxford have the attacking ability to beat any side in the division. Defensively they have work to do, and Port Vale are no pushovers. Since being beaten 7-0 on the opening day, they’ve gone unbeaten. However, this will be their toughest test so far, and the home side should come out on top.
Exeter City to beat Burton Albion
Another big price for a side playing away from home. Burton are currently 22nd, having picked up just two points from their opening five matches, while Exeter are up in 2nd. Although it’s early days, those positions really do reflect current form.
Exeter have won their last two against Reading and Carlisle, and while Burton have drawn their last two, they simply don’t have the same attacking quality that Exeter do. If they keep hold of Sam Nombe, I’m happy to get them onside.
