Three Monday meetings in Britain and Ireland have survived the weather, with jumps action coming from Huntingdon joined by Flat action from Galway in the afternoon and Newcastle on the all-weather later.
We’ve got a trio of fancies to follow on today’s cards, including a stayer with potential for better over hurdles for in-form trainer Charlie Longsdon
13:15 Huntingdon – Catuaba @ 5/1
The Charlie Longsdon team are typically starting to find form as the National Hunt season goes up through the gears and CATUABA is one that should have more give for them at Huntingdon this afternoon as an unexposed stayer in the Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at 13:15, which is a Betfred Extra Place Race (three places).
The son of Jet Away won his sole Irish point-to-point in April of last year and, after moving to this yard, has started to find his form over timber.
After finishing second at Doncaster (2m3½f, good) in December last year, he went to Warwick upped to this distance in May and opened his account.
He was still in the mix for honours on his next start over this C&D when he came down at the second last. In one start since, he was fourth at Southwell over a similar trip last month, with the four-month break perhaps telling as he tired late on.
James Best takes over from a conditional rider now and it will be a surprise if this mark of 95 is the best he can manage.
14:25 Huntingdon – Holly Hartingo @ 9/2
Trainer Alastair Ralph sends chasing newcomer HOLLY HARTINGO into action in the Novices’ Handicap Chase that is race four at Huntingdon today and will be hopeful she can make an immediate impact.
She finished second in one of two Irish points before joining this handler and won her first two last season over hurdles, initially at Ludlow and then here.
She found things a bit tougher in three spring starts but ran with credit and she should have more to come now facing the larger obstacles.
She is low-mileage and her point-to-point experience bodes well, as does that winning seasonal bow last term, which came off the back of a 234-day absence. Soft ground has seen her produce her best efforts thus far and rider Johnny Burke, who was 2-3 on her last season, returns here.
18:30 – Newcastle – Rare Jewel @ 5/2
William Haggas and Danny Tudhope team up with RARE JEWEL in the five-furlong nursery at Newcastle this evening and she is worth siding with off an opening mark of 79.
The Exceed And Excel filly was pitched in Listed company on her debut at Newmarket (6f, good) in July and understandably came up short in a race won by a next-time-out Group 2 second in Star of Mystery for Godolphin.
Rare Jewel showed the benefit of that experience by justifying favouritism at Beverley (5f, good to firm) in a novice heat in August and she once more tackled a quality race in her only start since, the Group 3 Prix D’Arenberg at Longchamp in late August.
Connections clearly feel she has plenty ability given those targets she has aimed at and she could find improvement on this handicap bow to record her second success. She is on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder and looks a likely sort for a trainer with a 43 per-cent strike-rate at Newcastle in 2023.
